If you’ve been checking out the news in recent months, you may have seen that a number of countries are seeking to block the use of torrents through various different measures. We thought we’d create a short article to talk about how this might affect you, ways of getting around the blocks and if it really is such a bad thing. Read on if you’d like to know more about it.
So first of all, which countries are involved in this? Well surprisingly, residents of the United States are relatively safe because so far no blocks have been put in place. Europe is the place most affected – countries such as France, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom have blocked popular sites like The Pirate Bay, making it more difficult for these users to find the content they’re looking for. This is likely to spread to much more countries however, so be prepared for the worst even if you aren’t affected right now. The Middle East has had blocks on this type of content for quite a while already.
Now, if you’re affected by the blocks, what’s the best thing to do? You have 2 key options – you could find another site to visit instead which may give you the same content, or you could use a proxy. If you find another site, you do have to be careful that what you’re getting is genuine, not every site in this industry is trustworthy. A search on Google will likely offer you many sites of this nature if you’re looking for a new site, so that may be the simplest place to go. We know a lot of you like The Pirate Bay however, which is probably the most popular one (and also the most likely to get blocked).
If you want to access this torrent portal, the best idea is through a proxy. This really isn’t that difficult, if you search for a proxy on Google you’re likely to find many which will give you access to it. There are many TPB-specific proxies on the internet, you can even find lists of them so that if one goes down, you can simply use another. Please note that these don’t last forever however, they normally only last a few weeks/months if you’re luckily, so expect to have to move around quite often. Either way, it gives you access to what you’re looking for.
The final point we’d like to talk about is whether these blocks are such a bad thing. The most obvious answer we can give is yes – We believe that information should be completely free and unrestricted, and these blocks show that Governments simply don’t have any respect for that. The benefit is that they also don’t understand the Internet either, so they’ll continue to put these blocks in place when they can easily be bypassed. For now, we should count ourselves luckily and continue as normal. If you’re affected by them, simply follow the tips we’ve given in this article and you shouldn’t have any issues for long.
